Baez Body explores the connection between the voice, body and emotions; it deconstructs longing, loss, and desire in the karaoke version of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust." The topic developed from researching the Indian concept of rasa, Richard Schechner's Rasa Boxes, and Body-Mind Centering. I delved into the expression of unfiltered raw emotion in the voice and body. I asked myself: How do the mind and body handle emotional storms? How does the body express, trap, and disguise emotion? I then wondered what would happen if I tried this song on — with my own voice and body. Once I did so, I pondered what was not being said in this song, but felt physically and emotionally through singing it. I approach Joan Baez with complete sincerity and humor, both honoring and poking fun at the deep emotions we feel and express through art. — L.G.
