"Distressed Brooklyn 2012, concept 1” is a wallpaper pattern comprised of photographs of distressed walls. All pictures that went into the composition of the pattern were shot in Brooklyn. Hengst is fascinated by such richly textured surfaces, in which the passage of time becomes an integral part of the design.
“As a graphic designer and artist, I see objects as shapes, lines, and forms with surfaces upon which to tell stories. For example, a wall or an object can act like a second skin onto which we may project images and narratives. Whether it’s the stark white walls of an art gallery or a weathered fresco, walls can talk. And when we listen and look past the exterior, we can translate the interior messages and reach a bigger audience.” — S. H.
